Cast iron is an iron-carbon casting alloy with carbon content above 2.11%, which is made of casting pig iron as raw material and cast directly after remelting. There are many types of cast iron used in industry, according to its graphite form and organization, performance, can be divided into gray cast iron, malleable cast iron, white cast iron, ductile iron and creep cast iron, etc.
1、Grey cast iron
Gray cast iron usually refers to cast iron with flaky graphite, in which carbon is mainly crystallized into free graphite, and the fracture is dark gray. Most of the common cast iron is gray cast iron, which has excellent fatigue resistance and vibration damping, so it is commonly used in automobile engine cylinders, gears, governor wheels, brake discs and drum wheels, as well as the base of large machine tools.
2、Malleable cast iron
Malleable cast iron is made from a certain composition of white cast iron by graphitization annealing process, where most or all of the carbon in the form of agglomerated graphite, due to malleable cast iron has much higher plasticity and toughness than gray cast iron, customarily known as malleable cast iron, commonly used to manufacture some important small parts. At present, it has been widely used in various fields such as automobile, railway, construction, electric power, textile, home appliance, national defense, and machinery manufacturing.
3、White cast iron
White cast iron, also referred to as white iron, it is completely in accordance with the Fe-FeC3 phase diagram for crystallization and cast iron, is the casting of gray iron or ductile iron in the local rapid cooling caused by the presence of carbon all in the form of carbon carburized fracture into a silvery white. Due to the presence of a large number of hard and brittle FeC3 white cast iron, therefore, the hardness of white cast iron, brittle, difficult to cut, so it is rarely used to directly manufacture machines, mainly for steelmaking raw materials or the manufacture of malleable cast iron blanks.
4、ductile iron
Ductile iron is formed by spheroidizing iron before pouring, in which most or all of the carbon exists in the form of spheroidal graphite. Ductile iron has good machinability, fatigue and high modulus of elasticity; because it contains a trace of magnesium, its rigidity, strength and impact resistance are stronger than gray cast iron, but the damping is poorer than it. Therefore, ductile iron is mainly used in the manufacture of automobiles, tractor chassis and other parts, as well as machine parts and valves, power line parts, etc.
5、creeping graphite cast iron
Creeping graphite cast iron is a kind of cast iron obtained from liquid iron by metamorphic treatment and conception treatment followed by cooling and solidification, and its graphite form is between flake and spheroidal graphite, which looks like flake under optical microscope, but different from gray cast iron is its flake is shorter and thicker, and the head is more garden (worm-like), so it can be considered that worm-like graphite is a kind of transitional graphite. Since the organization of worm cast iron is intermediate between gray cast iron and ductile iron, the performance of worm cast iron is also between the two, that is, the strength and toughness is higher than gray cast iron, but not as good as ductile iron. The wear resistance of creep cast iron is better, so it is suitable for manufacturing heavy machine tool bed, machine seat, piston ring, hydraulic parts, etc.
